Product note

Under-seat foot hammock

Cheap, light, and surprisingly effective for shorter legs.

Price band: Budget ($), $15–$30

What it's for

  • Supporting your legs so your knees are not unsupported for hours
  • Changing hip angle to relieve lower-back strain
  • Giving your feet somewhere other than the floor to be

Who it's for

  • Travellers under about 5'8" whose feet barely reach comfortably
  • People with lower-back discomfort when sitting upright
  • Economy flyers who want a big comfort gain for very little money

What to look for

  • Adjustable straps so you can set the height
  • Wide straps that will not dent the tray table arms
  • A washable fabric sling, and a pouch that fits a coat pocket
  • Something that packs to the size of a pair of socks

Honest downsides

  • Not usable on every seat, and some crew will ask you to stow it
  • Restricts your seatmate's footwell if you are not careful
  • Useless if you are tall, because your knees are already against the seat
