Product note

Light-blocking (blue-light) glasses

Useful as a light-timing tool, not as an eye-strain cure.

Price band: Budget ($), $20–$50

What it's for

  • Cutting light exposure when your jet lag plan says avoid light
  • Winding down before an awkwardly timed sleep window
  • Dealing with a bright cabin when you need it dark

Who it's for

  • Travellers actively following a light-timing plan
  • Eastward flyers avoiding evening light in the first days
  • Anyone who cannot sleep with a mask on but needs the light down

What to look for

  • Amber or orange lenses with a stated blocking percentage
  • Wrap-around or side-shielded frames, since side light matters
  • Fit-over versions if you wear prescription glasses
  • A hard case; these scratch easily

Honest downsides

  • Evidence for reducing digital eye strain is weak
  • Clear 'blue-light' lenses block very little
  • Colours look strange, so not great for reading a menu
  • They do nothing if you wear them at the wrong time of day
